Autonauts of the Cosmoroute is a travelogue, a love story, an irreverent collection of visual and verbal snapshots. In May 1982, Julio Cortazar and Carol Dunlop climbed aboard Fafner, their VW camper van, and embarked on an exploration of the uncharted territory of the Paris-Marseilles freeway. It was a route they had covered before, usually in about ten hours, but his time they loaded up with supplies and prepared for an ardous voyage of thirty-three days without leaving the autoroute. Along the way they would uncover the hidden side of the freeway and record The trip's vital minutiae with light-hearted abandon. At roadside rest areas, armed with typewriters, cameras, and mutual affection, the authors composed this book. Clean copy.

Janet Schaw, a supporter of the Crown, illustrates the extent to which the American Revolution had, by 1775, become a close, personal insurgency, pitting neighbor against neighbor. Schaw was a young, well-educated Scottish woman who traveled to North Carolina to visit her older brother Robert, the owner of a plantation on the Cape Fear River near Wilmington. She arrived in March of 1775 and while in North Carolina witnessed, among other things, land clearing through controlled burning and the killing of an alligator. More important, she observed a society that was splitting asunder under the stress of revolutionary politics. The decisions of the Wilmington Committee forced men and women along the Cape Fear to take sides. Worn covers with spine cloth coming loose. Binding is solid.

This is a fictional account of an Antarctic expedition that appears to be based on the Scott, Shackleton and with a little of the Byrd Little America 1928-30 expeditions. Includes a Forward by J. S. O'Brien, an engineer on the first Little America expedition commenting on the writing skills of the fictional "Jack Meredith" for "... the most realistic of any I have every read." Brief inscription on blank prelim page otherwise clean.

This is a facsimile printing of the 1924 edition, profusely illustrated including original advertisements. The book gives detailed information on the 414 cities and towns through which the famous highway passed, from Times Square in New York City to San Francisco's Lincoln Park, on the Pacific Ocean. Advice to readers includes "Don't forget the colored goggles," and "Don't stop to cool motor at top of a hill, put car in gear and coast down to cool motor." The trip was thrilling in 1924. The book is thrilling today. Mild nick to top of rear cover otherwise clean and bright copy.

Gifford Pinchot (1865-1946) was an American forester, the first head of the US Forestry Service, the person for whom the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington state is named, and a governor of Pennsylvania. In 1929 Pinchot and family took a seven-month cruise to the South Seas during which time he collected specimens for the National Museum. On board were other naturalists and representatives of scientific institutions. Profusely illustrated.

The relationship between man and horse on the Eurasian steppe gave rise to a succession of rich nomadic cultures. A collection of articles and a manuscript written by Julia Louisa Keyes (1828-1877). She was the daughter of novelist Caroline Lee Hentz and wife of Dr. John W. Keyes of Montgomery, Ala. The collection is a typescript of "Our Life in Brazil," a combination of diary, reminiscences, and letter copies, compiled in 1874 by Julia Louisa Hentz Keyes about her experiences in Brazil, 1867-1870. Keyes and her husband emigrated to Brazil after the Civil War. This volume was compiled by Nancy Hamlin Huber on the 100th anniversary of that first voyage. Blank prelim page gone, clean copy. Scarce.
