The author (1782 -1852) was an historian and educator, born in Ireland. In 1815 he and his family emigrated to Philadelphia, and he became a noted author of many history textbooks and other works. This is a first edition of his most famous work published in Philadelphia in 1821. Grimshaw's work remains a valuable reference for scholars and students of English language and linguistics. Both covers partially detached, but still holding on. Inside text pages mildly foxed. Front endpapers with previous owner's pencilled comments. Otherwise clean, binding tight.
