Regards From Serbia
by: Zograf, Aleksandar

Softcover. US, Top Shelf Productions, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover. 285 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to wrappers. As the NATO bombs fell on his hometown of Pancevo in 1999, Serbian cartoonist Aleksandar Zograf used his diary comics and e-mail to reach out to the world and offer a glimpse at the effects of the attacks. Over the weeks and months of the war, Zograf documented not only how the bombings shattered the lives of his friends and neighbors, but also how the routine of daily life remained unchanged. The most recent attacks on Pancevo's oil refinery are contrasted with the latest local soccer matches -- and American propaganda flyers are as likely to fall from the sky as American comics are to arrive in the mail.

Shepard Fairey Inc.: Artist/Professional/Vandal
by: G. James Daichendt and Robbie Conal

Hardcover. Petaluma CA, Cameron Books, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with wrap-around band. 224 pages in color. The first treatment of his extraordinary domain that is not an authorized product of his studio. From clothing and advertising to the world of fine art, the reach of this "street artist" extends to all aspects of society; yet given his great success, he is also the target of critics and detractors. He has challenged conventions, formulas, paradigms, and traditional borders that make many uncomfortable, spurring consistent debate over the legitimacy of his artwork, the authenticity of his background, and the ethics of his design processes. By reflecting on the many layers of being an antimodern artist, we learn much about both the current state of the art world and Fairey's influence on it. Featuring a wide variety of remarkable color photographs and a Foreword by Robbie Conal, Shepard Fairey Inc. gives us a fresh, objective understanding of the work of this astonishing artist.

Painting as an Art: The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts 1984by: Wollheim, Richard

Painting as an Art: The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts 1984
by: Wollheim, Richard

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, In Painting as an Art, which began as the 1984 Andrew Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., philosopher Richard Wollheim transcended the boundaries and habits of both philosophy and art history to produce a large, encompassing vision of viewing art. Wollheim had three great passions--philosophy, psychology, art--and his work attempted to unify them into a theory of the experience of art. He believed that unlocking the meaning of a painting involved retrieving, almost reenacting, the creative activity that produced it.In order to fully appreciate a work of art, Wollheim argued, critics must bring to the understanding of a work of art a much richer conception of human psychology than they have in the past: "Many [critics] . . . make do with a psychology that, if they tried to live their lives by it, would leave them at the end of an ordinary day without lovers, friends, or any insight into how this came about." Many reviewers have remarked on the insightfulness of the book's final chapter, in which Wollheim contended that certain paintings by Titian, Bellini, de Kooning, and others represent the painters' attempts to project fantasies about the human body onto the canvas. Light fading to dj spine. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Louise Lawler: An Arrangement of Pictures
by: Meinhardt, Johannes

Hardcover. New York, Assouline, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages, color photographs. In publisher's shrinkwrap. A beautiful collection of the work of contemporary artist Louise Lawler, who, for the past twenty years, has photographed art as it is situated and displayed, whether in private homes, public buildings, or museums, galleries, and auction houses. From an exhibition of Degas's materpieces to an Andy Warhol installation, this book invites you to discover Lawler's unique vision of modern and contemporary art. Lawler is fascinated by what "happens" to the art object after it leaves the artist's studio - where it goes, how it's displayed, how it's valued, what it means. In a Lawler photograph taken in a private home, the furnishings and objects surrounding the art are given as much attention as the art; in a museum, the view out of a window next to the artwork; in an auction house, the label identifying the artwork. Her striking and provocative photographs show us how the environment that surrounds it affects our perception of art and how it in turn affects all aspects of that environment.

The Golden Age of DC Comics 1935-1956
by: Paul Levitz

Hardcover. NY, Taschen, reprint, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 416 pages in color. In June of 1938, Action Comics debuted with a new kind of comic book character on its cover: a costumed man with two identities, who possessed extraordinary strength and powers-a man able to protect the public when ordinary measures would not do. He was not the first super hero, but the Man of Steel would become the prototype for all super heroes thereafter. Superman's story, and those of Batman, Wonder Woman, and hundreds of other DC Comics characters, are all told in The Golden Age of DC Comics. The single most comprehensive book on the subject, this volume traces the company's first decades, from its pulp origins up to the comic book burnings of the McCarthy '50s in more than 400 pages bursting with comics, art, comics, photographs, and more comics. Also included is an exclusive interview with legendary artist Joe Kubert. Expanded from the Eisner Award-winning XL book, 75 Years of DC Comics, TASCHEN's series on DC Comics explores the origins of comics' most enduring legends and the behind-the-scenes, era by era. In a reader-friendly size, the books feature updated essays by author Paul Levitz and thousands of covers and interiors, original illustrations, photographs, film stills, and collectibles to bring the story lines, the characters, and their creators to vibrant life. Rene Herbst: Pioneer of Modernism
by: Guillemette Delaporte

Hardcover. NY, Flammarion, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages, color and b&w illustrations. Rene Herbst's enduring furniture designs provide fundamental lessons for today's interior designers. A staunch modernist, Herbst was a founding member and later president of the Union des artistes modernes (UAM) in France, which sought to make domestic comfort accessible to all, regardless of class. The diversity of his work is testament to his prolific and creative output, and his design is marked by its simplicity and functionality. The French architect turned designer was nicknamed the "man of steel" because he pioneered the use of the material for furniture years before mass production on a large scale was possible. In 1929 he created several versions of his celebrated Sandow Chair, which ignited his research into serial production and inaugurated the era of mass production. This book presents a selection of the best works from the Herbst Collection held by the library of the Musee des Arts decoratifs in Paris, and demonstrates how Herbst was the catalyst of a new style of living that spurred the birth of modernity.

Twentieth Century Eightballby: Clowes, Daniel

Twentieth Century Eightball
by: Clowes, Daniel

Softcover. Seattle, WA, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 112 pages. Softcvoer, Light edgewear to wrappers. Color and Black and white comics throughout. Trailing the success of the movie based on Clowes' graphic novel Ghost World (1997) comes this collection of shorter stories from his alternative comic book Eightball. Many of the pieces are tirades, albeit entertaining ones, about things Clowes despises (perhaps the comic should have been called Hateball). "On Sports" details his contempt for professional athletics, and "Art School Confidential" is an expose of pretentious, talentless poseurs. This approach is carried to its logical peak in "I Hate You Deeply," a litany of the "types" that annoy Clowes, from "fashion plates" to "crybabies, whiners, and sensitive people." Clowes puts his misanthropy in abeyance for slice-of-life stories in which he ruminates during a stroll around his neighborhood or fantasizes about his fellow passengers on a subway. Worthwhile enough, these earlier stories merely presage Clowes' far-more-impressive recent work in which cynicism is presented more subtly, leavened with sympathy, and voiced by well-developed characters. If these pieces lack the heft of Clowes' longer, more ambitious efforts, the best of them are still masterful miniatures.

Morris Lapidusby: Desilets, Deborah

Morris Lapidus
by: Desilets, Deborah

Hardcover. NY, Assouline, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 80 pages. Morris Lapidus, the famous mid-century architect, outraged the architectural profession and riled critics with an architecture that was popularly embraced. His Miami Beach resort hotels - the Fontainebleau, the Eden Roc, and the Bal Harbour Sheraton - are synonymous with the glamour of Miami Beach in the 50s. Lapidus hotels are infamous as the stomping grounds of the Rat Pack and their fellow movie stars. Yet, during his life he was never published in architectural magazines and was discredited by the architectural profession - before undergoing a renaissance as a prophet of postmodernism. This book establishes the importance of his work and offers private insights into a man who once said why be exotic in private?
