The Complete Peanuts 1977-1978 (Vol. 14)
by: Charles M. Schulz , Seth, et al.

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 344 pages. As the 1970s wind down, the last two recurring Peanuts characters have fallen into place: Snoopy's brother Spike and the youngest Van Pelt sibling, Rerun. But that doesn't mean Schulz's creativity has diminished. For instance, in an epic five-week sequence, when Charlie Brown, found guilty by the EPA of biting the Kite-Eating tree, he goes on the lam and ends up coaching the "Goose Eggs," a group of diminutive baseball players, Austin, Ruby, Leland, and -did you know there was a second Black Peanuts character, aside from Franklin?-Milo. Also: a tennis-playing Snoopy ends up reluctantly teamed with the extreme Type "A" athlete Molly Volley... who then reappears later in the book, now facing off against her nemesis, "Crybaby" Boobie. All in addition to the usual cast of beloved characters.

Desert Dogs: The Marines of Operation Iraqi Freedomby: Strebe, Amy Goodpaster

Desert Dogs: The Marines of Operation Iraqi Freedom
by: Strebe, Amy Goodpaster

Softcover. Minneapolis, MN, Zenith Press, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 144 pages. Softcover. Very clean, unmarked copy still in publishers shrink-wrap. The Marines of Operation Iraqi Freedom highlights the human side of war, the day-in-the-life of U.S. Marines stationed in that volatile region. Dramatic, harrowing, and simply unbelievable images of the marines of Operation Iraqi Freedom, personal letters, and stories of coping with the pain of separation from their families and the horrors of war. Russ Bryant's photography chronicles every aspect of the daily lives of these marines: lazy camels amble by a cargo drop; blinding sandstorms threaten to blow away tents, supplies, and marines alike; Scud missile attack sirens send marines scuttling to their bunkers; sniper fire crisscrosses marine convoys moving into Iraq; tanks and bombs topple the portraits of Saddam that seem to loom over every Iraqi village; shelled-out tanks, armored vehicles, and even busses litter the road on the way to Baghdad; medical personnel attend to fallen marines and prisoners alike; the occasional silent interlude allows time for prayer and remembrance.

Man with a Blue Scarf: On Sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freudby: Gayford, Martin

Man with a Blue Scarf: On Sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freud
by: Gayford, Martin

Hardcover. US, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 247 pages, illustrations in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Lucian Freud, perhaps the world's leading portrait painter, spent seven months painting a portrait of the art critic Martin Gayford. Gayford describes the process chronologically, from the day he arrived for the first sitting through to his meeting with the couple who bought the finished painting, and he vividly conveys what it is like to be on the inside of the process of creating a work of art. As Freud completes his portrait of Gayford, so the art critic produces his own portrait of the artist, giving a rare insight into Freud's working practice. Through their wide-ranging conversations, the reader learns not only about Freud's choice of models, lighting, setting, pose, and colors, but also about his likes and dislikes, his encounters and experiences, and the ways in which he approaches his relationship with each portrait subject. Gayford records Freud's observations on the work of Michelangelo, Vermeer, Titian, Chardin, Goya, van Gogh, Mondrian, and his great contemporary Francis Bacon. The book is full of revealing anecdotes about the people Freud has met in the course of his long career, including Max Ernst, Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, George Orwell, W. H. Auden, Greta Garbo, and his grandfather Sigmund Freud.

The Polish Rider
by: Kalman, Maira; Salomon, Xavier F.

Hardcover. Giles , 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, red cloth with a color illustration label, 64 pages. Marking the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt van Rijn, this fourth volume in the Frick Diptych series offers fresh insight into one of the artist's most romantic and enigmatic portraits-The Polish Rider. This painting has been on view at The Frick Collection since the museum opened to the public in December 1935, and has inspired countless theories about its subject, meaning and history. An illuminating essay by Xavier F. Salomon, the Frick's Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, addresses the many questions of provenance, attribution, and historical and artistic context. In a creative, vibrant piece, New York based author and illustrator Maira Kalman, captures the elusive nature of the painting; an imaginary musing about Rembrandt, being Polish, a traveller, and her enduring fascination with the Frick. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Collected here for the first time, Sacco's darkly funny, revealing reportage confirms his standing as one of the foremost war correspondents working today. Journalism takes readers from the smuggling tunnels of Gaza to war crimes trials in The Hague, from the lives of India's "untouchables" to the ordeal of Saharan refugees washed up on the shores of Malta. And in pieces never published before in the United States, Sacco confronts the misery and absurdity of the war in Iraq, including the darkest chapter in recent American history-the torture of detainees.

Tunisian Mosaics: Treasures from Roman Africaby: Abed, Aicha

Tunisian Mosaics: Treasures from Roman Africa
by: Abed, Aicha

Softcover. Los Angeles, Getty Conservation Institute, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 138 pages illustrated in color. As the Roman Empire expanded its African settlements in the early centuries of the common era, thousands of mosaic floor pavements were fashioned to adorn the townhouses and rural estates of the African upper classes. Between the second and sixth centuries, mosaic art blossomed, particularly in Africa Proconsularis, the region comprising modern Tunisia. In contrast to the official art of imperial Rome, mosaics generally expressed the worldviews of private citizens. These artworks are remarkable for the intricate beauty of their polychromatic geometric and floral designs, as well as for figural scenes depicting the interests and activities of the patrons who commissioned them--scenes of daily life, athletic contests, gladiator spectacles, and classical literature and mythology. Abundantly illustrated throughout, Tunisian Mosaics: Treasures from Roman Africa offers the general reader a lively introduction to this extraordinary ancient art. Initial chapters survey the historical background of Roman Africa and discuss the development of mosaic art in the Mediterranean. Subsequent chapters profile Tunisia's major mosaic sites and tour the collections of important museums. A final chapter surveys current initiatives to preserve this heritage for future generations. Clean copy.

Treasures from Olana - Landscapes by Frederic Edwin Church
by: Church, Frederic Edwin

Hardcover. Ithaca, Cornell University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 71 pages. Illustrated throughout in color. Essay by Kevin J. Avery. "The wide variety of selections from Frederic Edwin Church's collection of his own paintings shows the master in all phases of his career, in sketches and finished paintings, depicting the breadth of his subjects and the high technical skills that established him as an eminent and influential artist in his own time. As works he held on to or reacquired and kept in his house during his lifetime, they embody the heart of his artistic vision and convey a deeply personal slant. As pictures he hung and lived with at Olana, they tell the larger story of that extraordinary place and are as illuminating when seen in context as on their own."

Embodiments: Masterworks of African Figurative Sculpture
by: Christina Hellmich , Manuel Jordan, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Prestel, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher'd shrinkwrap. This volume, on a unique and wide-ranging collection of figural sculptures from sub-Saharan Africa, examines not only each distinctive piece, but also how these works of art express value systems and cultural relationships both inside and outside Africa. The Richard H. Scheller Collection, presented in this book and on display at the de Young in San Francisco, offers a diverse portrait of sub-Saharan African sculpture. More than 100 distinct ethnic groups from more than 20 present-day countries are represented by works of art spanning several centuries and encompassing a broad array of styles. These objects represent ancestors, express community values, and serve religious and ceremonial purposes. Beautifully photographed in natural light, the sculptures range in style from classic and iconic to rare and unusual. The geographical breadth of the collection and the variations in the depictions will allow readers to explore both the histories and formal qualities of the genre. Texts by leading scholars enhance the understanding of 122 objects, alongside essays on major sculptures and themes. Writings on the scientific testing of pieces and the process of photographing the works round out this volume that expands our understanding of African figurative art.

Overspray: Riding High with the Kings of California Airbrush Artby: Norman Hathaway and Mike Salisbury

Overspray: Riding High with the Kings of California Airbrush Art
by: Norman Hathaway and Mike Salisbury

Hardcover. NY, PictureBox, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 226 pages. Color illustrations. Overspray is the conclusive account of the rise of airbrush art, and of the equally bright and glossy Los Angeles culture alongside which it came to prominence in the 1970s. Inspired by surf graphics, psychadelia and the slick shine of Hollywood, a generation of young artists began to make every lip and palm tree glisten, and every record cover shine. Fueled by a combination of intense demand, sleepless nights and brutal competition, the four men at the center of L.A.'s airbrush art market--Charles E. White III, Peter Palombi, Dave Willardson and Peter Lloyd-embarked on careers encompassing work for Playboy, Levi's, the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and major studio films including American Graffiti and Tron. Together, their work came to define the look of illustrative graphics for a generation of viewers. This book tells the story of these four artists for the first time through hundreds of images of the artists' best and best-known work, unseen production roughs, documentary photographs and other ephemera. Viewed now, their surreal, funny and utterly slick imagery seems all the more fantastic-combining technical precision with wild flights of imagination that bring to mind the work of some of today's top artists, from Takashi Murakami to Matthew Barney. Essay by Mike Salisbury, acclaimed designer of everything from Disney logos to Jurassic Park ad campaigns to Sassy magazine.

Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006by: Bing, Alison and others

Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006
by: Bing, Alison and others

Hardcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 2007, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, 244 pages illustrated in color. Scholarly essays accompany this monograph on the Japanese-American artist. In publisher's shrinkwrap. Published to coincide with a series of major exhibitions extending beyond 2007, Ascending Chaos is the first major retrospective of Japanese-American artist Masami Teraoka's prolific and acclaimed work thus far. In Teraoka's paintings which have evolved from his wry mimicry of Japanese woodblock prints to much larger and complex canvasses reminiscent of Bosch and Brueghel the political and the personal collide in a riot of sexually frank tableaux. Populated by geishas and goddesses, priests, and politicians, and prominent contemporary figures, these paintings are the spectacular next phase of a wildly inventive career. With essays by renowned art critics who discuss how Teraoka's work inventively marries east and west, sex and religion, Ascending Chaos is a critical overview of this cultural trickster.
